Variability of wildland fire emissions across the contiguous United States
نویسنده
چکیده
This study analyzes spatial and temporal variability of emissions from wildland fires across the contiguous US. The emissions are estimates based on a recently constructed dataset of historical fire records collected by multiple US governlnental agencies. Both wildfire and prescribed fires have the highest emissions over the Pacific coastal states. Prescribed fire emissions are also found to be high over the southeastern coastal area. Temporal variations of wildfire emissions in various regions are characterized by a number of strong emissions over the past two decades, which are closely related to precipitation anomalies. Prescribed fire emissions, on the other hand, show a n increasing tendency in recent years. An analysis of the emissions specifically for the three National En~issions Inventory (NEI) base years of 1996. 1999, and 2002 suggests that the average of these years would represent fairly typical wildfire emissions for all regions except the Southwest and Pacific Southwest. Prescribed fire emissions during the NEI base years. on the other hand. were much higher than the historical average for all regions except the Southeast. < 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Management and climate contributions to satellite-derived active fire trends in the contiguous United States
Fires in croplands, plantations, and rangelands contribute significantly to fire emissions in the United States, yet are often overshadowed by wildland fires in efforts to develop inventories or estimate responses to climate change. Here we quantified decadal trends, interannual variability, and seasonality of Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations of active fi...

Wildland fires release large amounts of particulate matter (PM), CO, S02, NO,, and Volatile Organic Carbon (VOC), which can cause serious consequence of regional and local air quality (Sandberg et al., 1999). All these components except VOC are the principal pollutants whose emissions are subject to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) established by the U.S. Environmental Protect...
متن کاملChemical Composition of Wildland Fire Emissions
Wildland fires are major sources of trace gases and aerosol, and these emissions are believed to significantly influence the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the earth’s climate system. The wide variety of pollutants released by wildland fire include greenhouse gases, photochemically reactive compounds, and fine and coarse particulate matter. Through direct emissions and secondary che...
متن کامل9 Estimates of Wildland Fire Emissions
Wildland fire missions can significantly affect regional and global air quality, radiation, climate, and the carbon cycle. A fundamental and yet challenging prerequisite to understanding the environment.al effects is to accurately estimate fire emissions. This chapter descnbes and analyzes fire emission calculations. Various techniques (field measurements, empirical relations, modeling, and rem...

Atmospheric chemical transport models are used to simulate historic meteorological episodes for developing air quality management strategies. Wildland fire emissions need to be characterized accurately to achieve these air quality management goals. The temporal and spatial estimates of emissions from fires, both wild and prescribed, have been problematic primarily because of uncertainty in the ...
